No Inspection Before You Commit
The biggest risk with an online private sale is obvious but easy to underweight in the moment: you’re often committing based on photos and a description, not a hands-on look. Batteries that “work fine,” a controller that “runs a little rough sometimes,” or a frame that photographs cleaner than it looks in person are all common gaps between the listing and reality.
No Recourse If Something’s Wrong
A private seller isn’t offering a warranty, and once the cash changes hands, you’re on your own if the battery dies in a month or the controller fails the next week. There’s no dealership backing the sale and no service department to call.
Pressure to Move Fast
Online marketplace culture tends to reward quick decisions — “several other people interested,” requests for a deposit to “hold it,” or a seller who wants cash same-day before you’ve had a real chance to look it over. That urgency benefits the seller, not you, and it’s exactly the situation where corners get cut on inspection.
Unclear Paperwork
Ask directly whether the cart comes with a title, and if it’s registered as a low-speed vehicle (LSV), whether that registration is current and actually matches the cart in front of you. A private-party cart without clear paperwork isn’t necessarily a scam, but it does mean extra legwork — and sometimes real obstacles — when you go to register or insure it yourself.
How to Protect Yourself If You Still Want to Buy Private
If you’ve found a cart you’re serious about, insist on seeing and test-driving it in person before any money changes hands, ask for maintenance or battery replacement history, and don’t let anyone rush you into a decision. If the seller won’t allow an in-person look before a deposit, that’s a reason to walk away, not a reason to move faster.
