How to Winterize Your Golf Cart the Right Way

A Long Island winter isn’t kind to anything left sitting outside, and a golf cart is no exception. Road salt, damp cold, and months of sitting unused can leave you with a dead battery, corroded contacts, or flat-spotted tires by the time spring rolls around. A little prep now saves a bigger headache later.

Give It a Real Cleaning First

Before it goes into storage, wash the cart thoroughly, including the underside, where road salt and grime tend to collect. Dry it completely — packing away a damp cart is one of the fastest ways to invite rust and mildew over a few months of sitting still.

Battery Care Is the Most Important Step

This is where most winterizing mistakes happen.

Lead-acid batteries self-discharge over time, and a battery left sitting at low charge through a cold winter can be permanently damaged. Charge the battery fully before storage, and if you can, check on it and top off the charge every few weeks throughout the winter rather than leaving it untouched until spring.

Lithium batteries are much lower-maintenance in storage — they hold their charge far longer and don’t need the same periodic top-off. Still, charge to around 50-80% before long-term storage rather than leaving it at 100%, which is easier on the cells over time.

Either way, disconnect the battery if you won’t be checking on it, and keep terminals clean and free of corrosion.

Protect the Tires

Cold weather and months of sitting still can lead to flat spots. Inflate tires to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure before storage, and if you have the space, get the cart up on blocks so the tires aren’t bearing weight all winter.

Watch for Road Salt and Moisture

If your cart sees any winter road or driveway use, road salt is a real threat to the frame and undercarriage — the same corrosion risk as the salt air you’ll hear us talk about for coastal driving, just a different source. Rinse the underside after any exposure, and check for rust starting at bolts, seat mounts, and the frame.

Store It Somewhere Dry, If You Can

A garage, shed, or covered space is ideal. If outdoor storage is your only option, use a proper fitted cover rather than a generic tarp — a tarp that traps moisture against the cart can do more harm than leaving it uncovered.

One More Thing: Check for Unwanted Guests

A golf cart that sits untouched for months is exactly the kind of quiet, enclosed space small rodents look for in cold weather. Check under the seat and around the wiring harness periodically through the winter — chewed wiring is a common and preventable spring surprise.
